The Redwing Blackbird

The Redwing Blackbird (1.16 MB)
I saw a redwing blackbird
This morning in the cattails by the pond.
It sang each raucous note
As though it was its first;
Sang as though it was feeling its heart burst.
A single redwing blackbird –
It flew across the pond and it was gone.
Through all the busy-ness
That happens through the day,
That’s the place where my thoughts stayed.
If I could learn the secret;
If I could just discover
How to live free and easy,
Treat the world like a lover.
If I could learn the secret,
I’d be free
To fly away across the sundance sea.
